This week in Maths, Site 4 Class B has been learning all about hearing and saying number names. The pupils enjoyed lots of fun, interactive activities that helped them practice counting and recognising numbers through rhymes, music, movement and play.

They started the session with some of their favourite number rhymes and action songs, including:

  • 'One Potato, Two Potato'
  • One, Two, Buckle My Show'
  • 'One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Once I Caught a Fish Alive'

The pupils also practised counting on their fingers, helping the children to link the number names they were saying with the quantities they could see.

Then, they explored lots of exciting activities throughout the provision:

  • Bubble counting: An adult blew bubbles while counting, "One, two, three, go!. The pupils then had lots of fun reaching, popping and even stamping on the bubbles.
  • Car ramp counting: They held their cars at the top of the ramp and counted down together saying, "Three, two, one, go!", before watching their cars race down.
  • Number drumming: The children explored drums, shakers and tambourines, while practising making one, two and three sounds with their instruments.
  • Teddy bears' counting picnic: The teddy bears were very hungry. The pupils practised counting as they gave them different amounts of food, such as one apple, two corn and three bananas.
  • Train counting: The pupils built a train track and practised counting as they pushed the train along. They counted, "One, two, three, go!" to set it off.

The pupils absolutely loved Maths this week. They had lots of opportunities to hear and say number names while developing their early counting skills through movement, music, sensory exploration and play.
