Life After Thomas Bewick School
We hope that this information will support parents / carers and students to begin planning their transition for life after Thomas Bewick School.
There are different pathways which students from Thomas Bewick could follow outlined below.
Timeline
Young people may transition from Thomas Bewick School after year 11,12,13 or 14 according to what is right for them.
From Year 9 we will start thinking about possible future pathways during EHCP reviews and introduce parents / carers and students to a SEND caseworker/advisor.
From Year 11 onwards
- September onwards – students/parents can make applications to further education colleges or social care providers for the coming academic year.
- October onwards – if a family is considering a SEND specialist college, Newcastle Local Authority will start discussing the application process with them. The Local Authority SEND team make applications to this type of college.
- Colleges (both Further Education and Specialist) – after applications are received by the College, they look at individual’s EHC plan and may visit students in school to decide whether they could meet the young person’s needs. Newcastle Local Authority SEN panel will review this and manage the allocation of places before 31March in the year of admission
- Transition visits are arranged between providers and school in the summer term
During Year 12 and 13 we will have further discussions in EHCP reviews and arrange visits to different providers and colleges.

Young people and their family should be aware that many further education or social care offers beyond school are not full time and many are for 3 or 4 days. Young people and their family will be supported to consider other options available alongside this which may be in volunteering, work placements, activities or support from social care (needs assessed). Newcastle Local Authority can fund courses on this basis according to individual circumstances.
Please note that there are many other providers besides those mentioned above and bespoke packages can be created to meet individual need – please speak to your son or daughter’s caseworker, or see the Local Offer, for more information.
