The National Curriculum
All pupils at Thomas Bewick have access to National Curriculum Programmes of Study at a level that is appropriate to their ability;teaching across the school is tailored to the needs of individual pupils. Classes study the following subjects depending on age and Key Stage: English and Maths (through the Literacy and Numeracy Strategies), Science, Design Technology, Music, Art and Design, Modern Foreign Languages, History and Geography, PE, Religious Education, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Careers Education and Guidance, Work Related Learning, and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). PSHCE is considered an important aspect of development for our pupils and is taught as a discreet subject as well as across the curriculum.
Religious education is broadly based on Christian beliefs but also aims to develop pupils’ awareness and recognition of other religions and cultures. Parents have a right to withdraw their child from all or part of the religious education programme or from collective worship (assembly) if they so wish. Alternative arrangements will then be made, in consultation with the parents.
PSHE and SMSC at Thomas Bewick School
Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. Although a non-statutory subject, the curriculum followed at Thomas Bewick School is based on the PSHE Association’s suggested programme for Key Stages 1-4 which encompasses many areas of study within three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
PSHE is taught as a discreet subject on a weekly basis within each Key Stage at Thomas Bewick School and topics are chosen to reflect the age, needs and diverse ability range of our pupils. Opportunities to further our pupils’ development in PSHE are embedded within many other subjects and are a focus of school assemblies, special events and curriculum themed weeks. There are also some occasions where teachers feel it necessary to teach an element of PSHE in relation to individual pupil need and this is usually planned with input from parents and relevant multi-agency professionals. A wealth of enrichment activities provided through our after school club programme, links with the local community, educational visits, overseas residential trips and our half termly ‘Super Skill’ focus further compliment and support the PSHE curriculum.
Our planning for PSHE covers emotional health and well-being, rights and responsibilities, personal and social development and sex and relationship education at a level appropriate to our pupils’ age. It is also one of the many ways in which we support the Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development of our pupils.
At Thomas Bewick School we promote fundamental British values whilst preparing our children and young people for life in modern Britain and the wider world. Through PSHE and across the curriculum, pupils explore democracy, rights and responsibilities, respect and tolerance of those of different faiths, beliefs and opinions – all of which are encompassed within our core school value: ‘Growth Through Understanding’.
At Thomas Bewick School we aim to provide effective PSHE education which helps to give our children and young people the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to develop as confident, healthy individuals and to be as independent as possible.
